FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is transportation provided?
Students may use the bus to go to BMHS. From the High School it is about a 10 minute walk. Classes are finished in time for students to walk back to get the bus at the end of the day.
Are the teachers certified?
Yes. The teachers are part of Banting’s staff. They are members of the Ontario College of Teachers and they are employed by the Simcoe County District School Board.
Who can apply?
Students between 16 - 18 years of age. Students generally have attempted a minimum of two full semesters in a traditional school. The Alternative Program is set up for those who, for a variety of reasons, are not benefiting from the mainstream school system. Typically, students have had failing marks, poor attendance and have underachieved.
Is there a cost?
No. Technically, the student is enrolled at a special Program in Banting Memorial High School. There is no fee for admission, however as at BMHS, there may be fees for field trips or special events. Every student must make sure they straighten out any fines owing BMHS for library books before being admitted into the program.
Can a student attend part-time?
Students must take three courses per semester to ensure they are full time. Currently, the Program does not accept part-time students. When students are achieving success they may attempt four courses per semester, if they can be scheduled.
Potential students must be motivated to change habits which have led to problems. They must be prepared to commit themselves to a useful learning alternative by changing habits and behaviours.
